Try telling that to Russia, even to this day. Honestly they probably see us as only once removed from Germany, what with our propensity to go shoot something up just for fun just when it's politically expedient. Difference is that Germany has a comparatively short drive to Russia.

Interestingly enough, NATO was formed years before the Warsaw Pact was. So yeah, many Russians do see NATO as an offensive organization aimed at Russia.

Whether that’s true or not doesn’t really matter. It’s the perception that matters.
