A few years ago, in a suburb north of Orlando, a friend of mine found his two Golden Retrievers quietly standing at the back patio door but not whimpering to be let out. A bear and two cubs had pushed through the screen and were enjoying a dip in his pool on a hot summer day. After an hour they left, with the two Goldens hanging back from the pool area until my friend went out and demonstrated that the bears were gone.

In the summer and fall, we leave the door open in bedroom with just the screen door closed. One night our 2 goldens were going nuts at the screen door. Normally if there is a bunny outside they haul butt out the doggie door. Not this time. Even I turned on the outside light, there was probably a500 pound bear about 15 feet away. The dogs knew better than to go outside.
