The spinal cord is the network that relays instructions from the brain to the body and messages from the body to the brain.
Transverse myelitis is an inflammation of both sides of one section of the spinal cord. It is a neurological disorder that damages the insulating material covering nerve cell fibers (myelin), interrupting messaging to and from the brain.
This can cause pain, muscle weakness, sensory problems (ie: tingling, numbness) and even paralysis. Bowel and bladder dysfunction are also possible.
Most afflicted recover, at least partially.
