The weather stole the headlines in Florida 45 years ago with a startling feat that has not been repeated to this day. On the morning of Jan. 19, 1977, something very unusual happened in South Florida: It snowed. Residents grabbed their film cameras to document the unusual event, and newspapers ran headlines in the biggest font they could muster. The Miami News even issued a special souvenir edition titled "The day that couldn’t happen: Snow in Miami!"

I remember the day. I was living/working in Coral Gables, just outside of Miami, was packing-up to move back to NJ, and grabbed my film camera to record it. People were acting crazy, like the end of the world was neigh.

I was living in Hollywood Florida in 1985 give or take a year and we had snow flurries once. It didn’t actually accumulate.

Well there was a lot of “snow” in Miami in the 80s.

That was the vaunted ice age that predicted at the time.
It was short but real.

Wish it would happen again - for about 3 or 4 days straight. That’s about the only way we’ll rid ourselves of the pythons that are ruining FL.

When I was living in Texas, I asked an old man if he had ever seen it snow, he said, “no, bless your heart but I saw it rain once”.

We arrived in southern California in March 1956, with my parents having decidedly moved their family on purpose there from wintry upstate New York. One year later, sometime in January or February we had snow, and my mom cursed.

That January of 1977 was a BRUTAL winter. I remember it well.
In Jan the entire Continental US had cloud cover. All states got snow. Blizzard snow hit our area. All roads were closed for several days.
I got Pneumonia.
It was used as proof we were entering THE NEW ICE AGE which was all the rage in the 1970s.

Phoenix AZ prided itself on never having snow. When it did snow, they claimed it was just “Soft Sleet.”

I was taking my high school senior mid-term exams that day. We all rushed outside to see the snow.
Being a transplant from New York, I had grown up with snow.
