ANECDOTAL
My (unvaxxed) relatives called to say they have left Singapore.
They say it has gone totally fascist.
So they chartered a private jet and got out of there!
They've relocated to Thailand.
I was a bit surprised they took this stance and pleased to hear they refused the so called vaccines.
We're not alone after all...
I don’t know much about the place but they left because of COVID policies and they refused the vaccine
I don’t know if there were tourist or lived there. But, you have no freedom there. A grownup disney world with lots of shopping. No free speech, can’t criticize the government, run by one family, no right to assemble, no guns, can’t criticize other religions, etc etc.
They’ve been there like 8 years
COVID policy forced them to flee it seems...
Singapore always has been.
What you’re saying makes no sense. Singapore has always been restrictive. As for Thailand, my business partner lives there and they have been tyrannical in their covid response WRT lockdowns, etc. There’s no way on God’s green Earth that I would go to Thailand right now...
It can’t be totally (previously) though? They have high net worth of individuals and my relatives ran a business there.
COVID policies sent them over the edge it seems
Just passing on the anecdotal.
No idea why they have chosen Thailand.
They did say they have to quarantine...

Considering their demographics, they’d be another Lebanon if they tried being a free state (1/3 Muslim Malays, 1/3 Indians, 1/3 Chinese - depending on which numbers you trust - the real ones you see when you go there, or the ones published by the Chinese-dominated government)...plus potentially hostile countries both north and south which are huge compared to them.
Sure be nice if multi-ethnic states could somehow get along without coercion, but that fantasy doesn’t extend outside of John Lennon’s mind.
Singapore has always been a...regimented society, let’s put it that way. It’s a place where you can get heavily fined for littering, the death penalty for drug smuggling, and imprisoned and caned (as in, corporal punishment) for graffiti. It’s a successful, highly-educated country but has no tradition of freedom or civil liberties.

“A grownup disney world with lots of shopping.”
I have been there and that’s a good description!
Not surprising. I’m still upset with them for demolishing the old Long Bar at Raffles.
Singapore has elections but it’s at least honest in that there is one political party.
In other nations of the world they have elections with multiple political parties pretending to be different from each other.
They’re right about that! Quarantines galore. I was just in Singapore, actually—I went as soon as the vaccinated travel lane opened. Prior to that, had I flown over, I would have had to conduct business in this Connect@ thing they set up, which meant I wouldn’t have been able to leave the facility and my meetings would have had to come to me.
It is good for them that they are prosperous enough to afford to relocate that way. Most folks are not.
