Does science have any data regarding life expectancy of homosexuals vs heterosexuals?

Back in the 80's someone took the time to gather the ages at death of all the obits in standard newspapers vs. those reported in The Advocate, the major gay newspaper.

If I remember the avg age at death for gays was 38.

This might not have been as rigorous an approach as possible, but ceetainly would result in a reasonable approximation of the correct numbers.

Of course it was roundly castigated. Mostly by people who died around 38yrs after birth.
