what is term of his appointment?

I thought being a Supreme Court Justice was for life. (Unless the Justice voluntarily retires, of course).

Replacement is a splendid idea, though. Maybe those uncharted waters will be charted in the not-too-distant future.

The Constitution states that there will be a Supreme Court, and also other federal courts as Congress decides. The latest Judiciary Act out of Congress dates from 1800 but has been amended many times. I believe the last amendment to the act was in 1925.

The Constitution gives Congress control over what kind of cases the federal courts may address. Congress can in fact restrict the courts in that way.

The Constitution states that judges possess lifetime appointment with good behavior. Congress, through the impeachment process, decides what constitutes good behavior or not. Beyond the impeachment process, the only way a federal judge or justice can be removed is through death or resignation.

The Constitution states that Congress may not reduce the pay of federal judges and justices.

If you want to know what Hamilton thought of the new Judiciary Branch, please read Federalist Papers #78 thru #83.
