Do the Japanese even like potatoes? Their starch of choice has always been rice. Could McD’s make some hash brown rice for them?

Russett potatoes were $1.49/lb at Safeway. Bacon is thru the roof.

They cook it in stews and meals like niku jagga and make croquettes out of them. Otherwise, it’s everywhere in their fast food as fries as well.

Were potatoes a common part of Japanese diet prior to the end of WWII? Was it American influence that sparked whatever popularity they have?
