One’s choice of caliber changes with the likelihood a shooting will involve automobiles. 9mm may be acceptable against perpetrators but is less acceptable against perpetrators in cars. You need something that will break car parts on the way to the target.

Buffalo Bore makes a hard cast that makes 9 mm very effective at penetrating car doors, wood , heavy winter coasts, etc. A guide killed a very angry grizzly with that ammo and if you have not read about it, a copy of the article is linked on Buffalo Bore’s web site.
Since the grizzly was in full charge and almost on top of him, the guide emptied the pistol so it is not known whether one or two shots would have done the job.
That said, I still like big holes.
