There is a history to that burnt-tasting Starbucks coffee.
Poor Italians in the old country who could not afford good quality coffee beans for their espresso bought inferior coffee beans and roasted them to within an inch of their lives. Later, those same Italians constituted the bulk of Italian immigrants to the U.S.
Snooty Americans who wished to appear sophisticated through drinking espresso — way cooler than drinking coffee — adopted the habit of over-roasting the beans. They stupidly thought that’s the way you’re supposed to do it. They then carried that habit over to ordinary coffee.
So now you know: Starbucks coffee is peasant food.
