Chicago Teachers Union leader calls mayor ‘relentlessly stupid’ as students miss another day of learning

The head of the Chicago Teachers Union is now calling Mayor Lori Lightfoot "relentlessly stupid" as hundreds of thousands of students are missing out on a fourth consecutive day of classes due to an ongoing dispute over coronavirus safety measures.

CTU President Jesse Sharkey made the comment Monday morning, nearly a week after his rank-and-file voted to switch to remote learning because of increasing coronavirus cases in the area. However, Chicago Public Schools is refusing to allow remote learning and instead has been canceling classes outright, while both sides remain locked in negotiations to bring students back into classrooms.

"We feel like we’re at a point where we don’t have enough at the table to be able to go back to the people who, frankly, have sacrificed a lot at this point, and confidently say, ‘This is something that can help us ensure our safety," Sharkey said Monday. "The mayor is being relentless, but she’s being relentlessly stupid, she is being relentlessly stubborn."

Does it matter? Do Chicago public schools actually teach? Do Chicago students actually learn?

You get what you pay for. How much in union dues did they give to the mayor to elect her.

HA HA!

In 10 years, people will really be bitching about how far behind urban blacks have fallen behind other groups.

They should rightly blame progressives, bloated government and their covid schemes - but I doubt they will.

This would be hilarious were it not for the children. Many of the kids are in mortal danger if they cannot go to school. If they are from single parent working mom families, they have to stay at home alone, and can get into trouble, get killed, etc.

Unions don’t get to decide when or where the staff works. That is work assignment that is done by management.

If you don’t want to work quit. If you won’t work management will fire you.

Management that lets the union decide work assignments don’t deserve the name and should be replaced.

I know he’s not necessarily a teacher, but he is connected to them and provides direct influence.
The unprofessional and disrespectful behavior most likely flows straight down hill. Calling the mayor ‘relentlessly stupid’ because she disagrees with him is highly inappropriate.

What masochistic fool would voluntarily live, work, raise a family and send their kids to school in Chicago. Imagine having Lori Lightfoot or the Chicago Teachers Union having any control over your life?

I agree. What the union is doing at this point is forcing the Mayor’s hand.

At this point the mayor has to play hard ball or lose face in front of the community.

Now she has to tell the teachers to report for work or face disciplinary measures.

After that if the teachers stay out they are in illegal strike territory.

The mayor claims it was illegal for the teachers to just walk out- yet the teacher’s union just ignores it if it is and the mayor does nothing about it- yet in states where the mandate is required, or masks, etc- they actually enforce it by arresting non complying people? I guess some things are more ‘illegal’ than others-

ON STRIKE AND ALONE.

Not at all what they are used to experiencing.

Years ago, they had support from the sympathetic students and the thoroughly controlled parents, but those were the days and they are no longer the same.
