Idea to end "paper" fire district is facing resistance. Its only job is to send money to two other entities.
Illinois politicians often call for reducing that number. But it's a difficult task to eliminate any entity.
Even the district's trustees call it a "paper" entity.
. It simply sends most of its property tax money to the city of Elmhurst and Bensenville Fire District No. 2, which serves its namesake municipality.
Last year, the fire district in the unincorporated area collected $290,000 in property taxes. Its only job is the mere act of sending a big check annually to Elmhurst and District No. 2.
Despite that simple duty, bureaucracy is inevitably involved. For starters, the trustees each get $1,000 a year.
That's in contrast to the state's school and park districts, where board members get paid nothing and arguably do far more work than those in a "paper" district.
District No. 1 also pays resident Paul DiMichele $250 a month to handle paperwork, for a total of $3,000 a year. And the district pays its lawyer, Pat Bond, hundreds of dollars annually. "We have been trying to figure out what he does," Summer said.

Way too many bloodsuckers.
And just what do the 1400+ townships do? Some areas have zero?
This is such a “make you feel like you’re doing something important feel good” story. We’re taking 10 thousand dollars, maybe? Certainly enough money for righteous indignation.
And yet, at state and federal levels, that’s not even pocket change. Total misdirection. Get back to us when someone asks about Biden’s shill kid and the Russians , or China, or Ukraine, or the Clintons and anybody, or Pelosi or even McConnell
Really, this fire district news is on the level of Jimmy the Candy Kid selling gum and fireballs in elementary school.
It’s a rhetorical “get back to us”, not personal.
I am a director on the board of my tax district. We collect $1.9 million a year in taxes, and are responsible for spending it on paving, plowing snow, and trimming trees. Nobody on the board is paid anything - we’re all volunteers working for free.
This is common in Illinois, they have one of the largest numbers of government entities per capita of any state.
Over 6000.

Illinois ranks highly in many statistics. Mostly bad statistics.
Illinois has more units of government than any other state.
It’s true. Look it up.

—”It’s true. Look it up.”
Why yes, we are NUMBER ONE with a bullet!
Is that good?
Not for us it isn’t.
