I found this post enlightening:
In the Bloggers & Personal forum, on a thread titled Cleveland man turned away from Cleveland Clinic’s Lutheran Hospital for reasons that have patients worried1ScrappyArmyMom wrote:

As a Medical Technologists let me explain this situation.
The hospital may be open, but it can’t diagnose more than 87% of cases without us.
You can’t do surgeries without us. We are the ones who test the patients blood type and confirm what blood or blood products a patient would receive.
We analyze everything from urine, sweat, blood and cerebral spinal fluid. We are the ones who ID the microbes or viruses infecting your body. We also IDthe parasites. We are never mentioned by the lame stream media.
However, without us, your Doctor is just guessing.
We also type organs, determine whether you’re receiving therapeutic dosages of meds and more.
We are the ones that find the blood cancers.
So your hospital may be open, but without Medical Techs, your hospital is just putting on bandaids.
