Nicolas Cage has revealed he once begged director Francis Ford Coppola to let him be in the Godfather trilogy.
The actor, who is Coppola’s nephew, was 25 when 1990 film The Godfather Part III was due to be shot, and told his uncle: “I really think I ought to be in your movie.”
Cage, speaking as part of The Hollywood Reporter’s actors roundtable alongside other Hollywood stars, revealed: “I said, ‘I really think I ought to be in your movie, Uncle. I really think it’s a good idea if you would cast me. I think I could play this part.’ He continued: “He was going to cast Andy Garcia, and I said, ‘But I just see myself more as James Caan’s son, and he’s playing Sonny’s son. He’s not playing Michael’s son. He’s Sonny’s son. I just feel a little more James Caan.’

There was room for Cage in III, there must have been a reason which he has kept to himself.
But she nailed the role of Michael Rizzi in Godfather I.
Godfather I and II were based on the book. Godfather III was not, and was a mess.
LOL... yup, but low bar
Spoiled play actor squabbles...Who can act the most arrogant, difficult and spoiled on the set!
Mario Puzo did co-write III, though, but he definitely wasn’t at his “A game” by that point. The thing about III is that it always seemed like a cynical money-grab. Coppola had horrible money problems throughout the ‘80s after losing his shirt on a movie called “One From the Heart” starring Teri Garr. Godfather III was an attempt to right his financial ship, so he cut corners on cast budget, e.g., wouldn’t pay for Robert Duvall to come back.
Godfather I or II would have been mean.
It was Godfather III. He was doing him a favor.
Not a big fan. I only watch the stupid treasure movies (because of Diane Kruger, not him).
“I like Cage, but I don’t think he would have been a good fit.”
Good actor, but he is a full fledged leftie.
Well, seeing how Godfather III turned out, maybe the casting would have helped.
Remember Sonny was a “hothead”, and Cage can definitely play a hothead as good as anyone in Hollywood, so I think he could have pulled off the role of Sonny’s son. This was right on the heels of his role in “Moonstruck”, which probably could have garnered him a Best Supporting Actor nomination if the cast hadn’t been loaded with so many other great performances.
I saw Godfather III....or part of it....in the movie theater.
I fell asleep.
“there must have been a reason which he has kept to himself”
Well, Cage seemed to have wanted to make it on his own in Hollywood, that’s why he went by “Nicolas Cage” in all but I think his first movie role, instead of “Nicolas Coppola”. So maybe Francis wanted him to stay true to that.
Never realized he was Coppola’s nephew. Never really been a big fan. A few good movies that I liked. Now I realize how he got in the biz.
He could have played Fredo.
He isn’t a fraction of John Cazale.
John Cazale was Meryl Streep’s lover.
He died too young.
.
.
Nicholas Cage is At his BEST when he does comedy and I don’t think he has ever realized this Peggy Sue Got Married, Raising Arizona, and Trapped in Paradise he played all those roles really well.
He died of lung cancer.
He might have been good as Connie’s husband.
Are you sure? That's his real-life aunt.
