Good! A grossly overrated self proclaimed auteur, all style, no substance. Thought he could follow in the footsteps of the French New Wave filmmakers; critics that decided to make their own films, and he tried to be the first in the US.
His “heyday’, if that’s the word for it, was only from 1971 to ‘75, crashing after “At Long Last Love”, arguably THE biggest flop by a major director in the decade . In her review of “Heaven’s Gate”, Pauline Kael labled Michael Cimino as “the work of a poseur who got caught out”, and that fits Bogdanovich to a T.
Always under the delusion that he was a great filmmaker simply because he loved movies, was a student of movie history, did a documentary on John Ford,and of course, his long time friendship with Orson Welles.
