Different people using different methods. Kirsch pointing to someone else who thought the number was over 300K but Kirsch's own current estimate remains 150,000.
For the sake of discussion, let's assume the impossible is true - that VAERS is exactly accurate. What other vaccine in US history has not been pulled with a LOT fewer than 10,000 deaths and many times that *very serious* reactions? If memory serves, the Swine Flu vax was yanked after well less than 100 deaths. I clearly recall how we were all gonna die from that virus.

For the world:
( 5,440,715 “global deaths) / 7,917,528,778 global population ) x 100 = 0.0687%
Less than seven one-hunredths of one percent “global deaths” from Covid over two years.
For the US....
( 825,819 “U.S. Deaths” over two years / 331,002,651 U.S. population ) x 100 = 0.249%
About 25 one-hunredths of one percent, given the rule of thumb that about one percent of a population dies off each year.
If one accepts any of the resultant percentages for Covid-19 deaths as relates to various populations as reported from official sources, then the “event” isn't as the hysteria warrants.
Then, with the VAERS system and its European counterpart, those numbers cannot be validated either, until time passes. Various pre-Covid assessments of the VAERS system can be used to estimate, but after two years so much seems just estimate and data manipulation.
What is certain is that there is no consistency — as you observe — in any of the “event” from the WHO's April 2020 directions through the often-vacillating advice of CDC and FDA, through until today.

Using the examples of thalidomide and Vioxx, real drug damages' numbers will not be known until years from now. I will try to trust a drug or any other product or service at such time as liability shielding is withdrawn and the tort system can assist in discovery and verification. Until then, it's politics all the way down.
