I-95 is impassable for 50 miles from Dunfries, in NoVa, south to Carmel Church. That stretch is quite hilly so one can understand the ice and snow reeking havoc. I once had an experience like that getting stuck in a car for 8 hours trying to cross the Poconos in Pennsylvania on I-80.

That section of I95 has huge traffic jams even in perfectly clear weather, on weekends.

The only alternative routes are US1, and some two-lane country roads with no shoulders, and lots of curves and hills.

I grew up in North Dakota and have been to Buffalo. Believe me, neither place has idiot drivers anywhere comparable to NoVa. Do you know what the main industry is in NoVa?

And yeah, the snow is wetter there and tends to form ice much more easily, so there is that factor as well.
