What exactly the Presidente of Chile is supposed to do about it is anyone's guess.

Bizarre.

Actually, there would just be no pollenating plants. Still, I can’t imagine life without bees. Except for all the ones that stung me. Killer bees I can do without, and of course Murder Hornets. And all hornets in general. Honey bees I don’t really see as a problem, though. Except for the rare times when even they will sting you. But the good part about it is that they die as a result.

I’m with you. To me, they’re like Grizzly’s - if they’re going to have a crappy attitude towards us humans, I say “Let them Die”.

They will mostly leave humans alone, unless they feel threatened. Without them, agriculture would be in the crapper. But without water, a whole lot more than bees would die, and what would any presidente of any country do to make more water. He can build dams, de-salinate sea water, seed clouds, or send helicopters up to the Andes peaks with large hair dryers to melt the snow caps. Except for the latter measure, these are long-term projects, if he hasn’t been on the job ‘til now, neither were any of his predecessors.

And when they die, you will follow shortly after. Beekeepers are an odd lot but their chosen profession keeps the food chain working.w
Without the bees, pollination does not occur. Without pollination, food becomes extinct. Without food, you die.

Bees are not native to north or south America. They were brought here by the Europeans. There are plenty of insects that pollinate plants such as wasps, moths, butterflies, flies, beetles...... Wasps pollinate and destroy aphids.

Grizzlies Sharks, whatever. I’m fine with nature’s creatures until they have a propensity to kill humans. Then, I’m for just wiping them out completely. That’s nature too. Protect your own.

20,000 species of bees in the world and 4,000 of those are native to the US and like you said the European honey bee isn’t one of them.

And they greatly enhance the yield of crops, most of which are also not native to North or South America. And North American bee husbandry is greatly superior to that of Europe. And wasps, butterflies, flies, Beatles, do not make honey or wax, although you never know what George Harrison and Ringo Starr may get up to. Finally, if bees are dying for lack of water, so are wasps.

I’m sure that the bees brought to the protest were really happy to have been uprooted from their familiar homesites to go on a big city adventure.

I don’t think George Harrison has been getting up to very much for the last 20 years or so.

Yup. Those returning from the field were probably real happy to find their homes inexplicably gone, with nowhere to puke their honey and brush off their pollen.

So Paul Harrison’s the one who’s still alive? Has he been making much honey?

“And wasps, butterflies, flies, Beatles, do not make honey or wax,”

Not making honey or wax is a far cry from ‘There would be no life if the bees die’ as your title says. If not having honey or wax is such a crisis how did life survive in North and South American before their arrival? Apparently, just fine.

“Finally, if bees are dying for lack of water, so are wasps.”

If lack of water is killing the bees then how are the people of Brazil still alive? Don’t they need more water than insects?

Oops, Chile, not Brazil but since they are next door they must be having the same problem.

Do not confuse the text of the headline with my personal sentiments. You’re raising questions that I already did in my comments.

Yes, bees are important to agriculture in the western hemisphere in the 21st century. Yes, it would be very bad if they died off. But this whole protest is utterly silly for the reasons that we both have enumerated.

My first thought on the matter was, why don’t they just take a garden hose and wet the ground around their hives. The bees would know what to do. They’re programmed to forage. WTF do they want with the POTOC. A Mayan rain dance with a sacrificial virgin?

I’m sorry. President of Chile would be acronymed POC.

Not an option; they Aldo require pollination.
