What do FReepers think of 9mm carbines as a mid-power varmint rifle? My requirements are relatively cheap ammo, typical range is < 100 yards (usually 50 yards or less, really), only moderate penetration, with stopping power similar to a .357 handgun / somewhere between a .22lr hollow point and a 12 ga. deer slug. More...
Yes it is. It was designed round-up for a very particular job using a technology illegal in the U.S. Your point?
My originally stated opinion remains.
That won't fly where I live. The livestock associations and livestock protection laws are strong here. I don't care if you hire F Lee Bailey as your attorney, you will pay every last dime of damages for those chickens, along with the delivery fee from the poultry house. You won't get a pass for being an irresponsible pet owner. And, if your stupid enough to think you are going to threaten retaliation against the livestock owner for shooting your dog, you are going to do a guaranteed stint in the county jail.
Yup,
You worry to Much,FRiend.
Are You an Aviator ?!
;)
If you can find one
You do know, that the FN5.7x28 as well as Ruger 5.7X28 can be purchased in the US, right?
So either the AAFES (Army Air Force Exchange Service) is selling illegal arms, and I am going to jail on a weapons charge, or your dining pleasure will be a flambe of crow
Or are you going to continue to be a pretentious ass?
And that is the point.
As does H&K, as in H&K USC in 45ACP
Every once in a while you get lucky. I had to travel about 3 hours in each direction to get it...but somehow pulled into Buc-ee’s for some great BBQ sandwiches both ways. So it was a fantastic deal from my POV.
5.7 was designed to make up for lack of rifle-scale power via a high-rate high-capacity full-auto in a reimagined carbine package, putting a lot of holes in a small space rather than one big hole. It’s the best you can do in a carbine with a pistol caliber - and requires full-auto to make it up by volume.
If you’re not aware: full auto is, for all practical purposes, illegal in the USA. Like seriously, 10-years-in-prison and $250,000 fine, illegal.
Without a full-auto platform, 5.7 is merely a respectable high-density pistol round.
If you’re looking at a carbine-sized platform, and are limited to semi-auto, there’s no reason to not use a rifle caliber. Yes, SBR is legal (your jurisdiction may vary). If there is, I’d like to hear it - without ad-hominem insults.
Still not seeing why you’re rabidly arguing off-topic.
Thompson M1,,,
Like 16 pounds!
That ain’t Sterling!
Maybe I should be... :-)
My POV too! ;-)
Right. I believe most places, there has to be damage or threat AND the dog is fully on your property. I don’t take that shot if the dog is on or across the road, no matter how clear the shot is.
I also have no recourse if our chickens cross that road and a dog gets ‘em. However, none ever has ever crossed the road, or even gone on it and been hit by a car. I guess they (the chickens) are smarter than dogs in that regard. I would not have guessed...
A few years ago my daughter had let her chickens out and a dog killed 4 of them on our property. But, the dog never threatened a human and in that instance didn’t come back on the property immediately: Instead I chased it home and confronted the owner with 3 of the dead chickens. He agreed to compensation (it was very modest), I gave him time to do it, he paid a little, then they moved. (So much for going easy on him!)
Interesting. I figured the longer barrel would not really incur any disadvantage in this usage, and might offer a slight (slight!) accuracy advantage.
?
That’s interesting. It turns out I can get a lightly used .22 Magnum for a song. But (I’ve just started reading at a site called LuckyGunner.com), the best measure of stopping power / a quick kill is probably “Wound Cavity Volume”, and a typical 38 Special round (much less a 9mm or .357 Magnum) is 2-1/2 times better than the best .22 Magnum round.
It may be that the best bet is to go ahead and grab that .22 Magnum (even already has a scope on it) for the occasional coyote seen at the east end of our property - as that’s sometimes going to be an 80 - 100 yard shot. Dense woods and no humans close in that direction (also the source of the coyotes we hear often and see occasionally.)
That said, I should check on ammo cost and availability.
Then wait for a good sale on that HighPoint 9mm or MAYBE a .357. That’d be for the shorter range situations in other directions.
I’ve not ruled out a 20 g. shotgun, but, the noise and use-by-wife factors are not positive, there. I think wifey would fire a 20 ga. or even a 12 ga. in an imminent danger to US scenario, but otherwise... probably not.
Availability of .22 WMR ammo? Doesn’t seem to be good on 1st look.
Actually, 12 to 14 inches is enough to obtain peak accuracy in 9mm. It's a pistol bullet that doesn't have good ballistics to begin with. The longer 16 inch barrel does obtain peak velocity. Any longer than that, and velocity may suffer with some loads. There isn't much powder to burn in a 9mm.
1. You can own a fully automatic weapon. Provided you jump through the hoops (license, permits, etc)
See FFL under BATF
2. You talked of 9mm carbine, I offered an alternative, and you went BSC talking all manner of misinformation to the point of insufferability,
...that you took to this post.
I certainly have the hope you don't own anything close to a weapon because your misleading unintelligible diatribe offers little value or affords a a cogent platform for you to talk with any authority on any subject involving small arms, firearms (of which there are only 4 items that according to 26 USC 5845 are identifiable as "firearms" but you knew that, right?
"If there is, I’d like to hear it - without ad-hominem insults."
That is what I am doing and the
"ad-hominem insults."
Well, they are 100% free for the patently self-assured people that are WRONG!
My work is done here!
You're welcome.

I have the 1927 M1 model but for 251 USD I can get the drum version.
But I have to look at other munitions to purchase in todays environment.
The 223 round was from the start a varmint round by shorting the barrel to carbine length you already dropped the velocity and energy down 20 to 30% depending on how short the barrel is from 24” to 16” for way less money than an AR9 or similar carbine you could buy a Lee loader and load down to even lower fps down to 22hornet levels or 22 wmr use 55gr Vmax poly tips and never worry about pass thought those bullets fragment even at 22 hornet velocities. If you want to quiet it up splurge on a suppressor for the carbine and pay the tax stamp fee loaded down it will be quieter than a pellet gun and with 60gr subsonics deadly on anything smaller than a coyote like the first of an angry God.
