When I was a lad I worked in fleet service at JFK airport in NYC for 2 years, on the ground loading and unloading planes. I never once heard the term “tarmac” from anyone that worked there. It was called “the ramp”.

I think that is a British-ism

I always understood the tarmac to be the runway, not the ramp that gets you from the building to the airplane door.

I thought the tarmac is where the plane is parked while loading, and the ramp is the road (or taxi way) next to the runway where the plane taxis to the runway.

Oh, you’re right I think. On second read, it looks as if she never went anywhere near the tarmac, just went down the ramp without authirization. The headline needs to be rewritten...then again, the story is totally uninteresting if she never in fact made it to the tarmac...there goes another few minutes of OGINJ’s life he won’t get back....

What did you call a hoagie or a grinder at JFK?

Kind of like the Brits that walk on the ‘pavement’, or use a ‘rubber’ to erase mistakes.. :P
