When I skydived years ago, the veterans who skydived would tell stories about troop deployments above thunderstorms and troops getting carried in the storm for a couple miles from their drop target because their chutes were deployed as they exited the aircraft. Often wondered why they didn’t release their main chute,drop and deploy their emergency chute.

I had a major malfunction, a Mae West... cutting lose was processed and dismissed in less than a nanosecond!!!
And I’m not a quick thinker!
And the typical static line training is about 1200 AGL
Decidedly less for combat drops.
And I would be very unhappy if a Jumpmaster sent me out cloudbusting? Yes, some do it for fun, sometimes.
Would you want to drop down into the middle of a thunderstorm?
