True, but the spending had a purpose - winning the Cold War. We also massively increase debt to win WW2. But then, even Democrats understood the moral obligation to keep debts and spending under control, and our expanding post-war economy erased the debt. Sadly, that never happened starting with the Clinton years, although Speaker Gingrich did his best.

The Debt was held at 50% of GDP, it’s 126% today. I’ll take the 50%.

That might not have been the case had he not had a Democrat-controlled House during his entire presidency and a Democrat-controlled Senate during his final two years,
