I hate the new word “partner” for relationships that should say “husband and wife” instead.

In my day, “partner” was for law firms, golf courses and cattle drives.

If they are living as married but not married but shacking up, “partner” works as good as anything else to avoid the reality of fornication.

Honestly, I read it as they were just business partners.

Depending on how their business was set up, it might be that “partner” is the correct legal term. As in “business partner”.
