The "horsepower wars" started between the police and moonshiners. The first cars the FL State troopers used in 1939 were basic Ford business coupes with the larger Mercury flathead V8s, to try to keep up with the moonshiners, who were always finding ways to modify their vehicles to stay a step ahead of the cops and "renvenooers". It was one factor that led to the creation of NASCAR. Too bad NASCAR mgmt, even before the woke idiots who now run the show lost sight of it's roots.
