22 pistol for no legged snakes
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dude. You must be a good shot. I’d have trouble hitting a snake with a .22 pistol
I kind of pride myself on my snake shooting abilities. First I’ve been using the same pistol for over 40 years (6 inch S&W K-22). Second most are shot from about 15 yards when I spot them crawling across the road. I’ll kill 80 to 100 rattlers a year on the ranch and I’ve learned a few tricks. Only time I go for a head shot is if someone is with me and I can’t help but try and show off. If they’re crawling across the road stop about 15 yards away and they’ll usually just stop. Use the door for a rest and put the first shot in the body which usually breaks the spine making a follow up head shot relatively easy. An old rattler is surprisingly fast when they want to be and get get in the bushes fast. That’s when you end up wasting shots trying to hit the damn thing. During the summer when they’re crawling I swear the Turkey Vultures follow me around. They can clean up a rattler in short order. I’m breaking in a 4 inch ten shot 617 this year and giving the old K-22 a break. It’s definitely not as accurate as the K-22 with the longer sight radius but I think it do.
