What line was that? “Everything free in America?”
Now that I think about it, there was a scene where two women were helping Maria get ready for a date.
Those two women sang a dialog that was poking gentle humor at the American lifestyle they had been told to expect.
Maybe that part was where the jokes became a little too
barbed.

** My other 3 favorite songs from that movie I haven’t seen in 30 years but never forgot:

B. Somewhere.
C. Something Good Is Coming

It’s a shame because that line paired with...

Puerto Rico, You lovely island,
Island of tropical breezes.
Always the pineapples growing,
Always the coffee blossom blowing.

Is a great example of the ambivalence that immigrants feel about the place they left.
