Omicron Is Pushing America Into Soft Lockdown

“I do not see a scenario for any kind of shutdown,” New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio declared this week, as parts of New York were in fact shutting down all around him. Broadway canceled show after show. Restaurants closed their kitchens. De Blasio’s successor, Eric Adams, who will take office January 1, nixed his inauguration gala. There has been no March 2020–style universal shutdown, but New York is not back anymore, baby.

For Brent Young, who runs a butcher shop and two restaurants in Brooklyn, it began last week when, one by one, staff members tested positive. “It’s more or less decimated our workforce,” he says. One of his restaurants had been booked solid with parties for a week—the holidays are one of the busiest times of the year for restaurants—but people started canceling those parties too. At this point it’s not worth trying to stay open, Young says, “because the anxiety’s so high no one’s wanting to eat.” For most vaccinated people, Omicron will be mild. But even a mild cold, sufficiently widespread, can disrupt a city.

visiting my 93 yo mom in SW va, we were required to wear masks christmas day, NOT by my mom, but by the 37 yo niece and her know-it-all spouse who are concerned their 3 yo daughter might catch covid from the adults, because she is too young to get vaccinated (they will be first in line when that age group is eligible).

today we all had to meet outside because there were 14 people there.

All this for the 3 yo, despite the fact that she attends day care, swimming lessons, dance lessons and catholic instruction class.

Oh, and her vaccinated day care teacher was diagnosed with covid.

Masks are not mandated in VA as they are in montgomery county maryland, so I didn’t think going to the grocery store would be as aversive.
But every few minutes, the “please wear a mask even if vaccinated, to protect those around you” came across the loudspeaker.

Not only is the virus endemic, the asinine theatre-policies are too.

50% of men over 80 have prostate cancer, mostly contained. If they have a heart attack, the prostate cancer is not likely to be mentioned.

If they test positive and have a blood oxygen number crashing downwards lower and lower and then die, and also had contained prostate cancer, personally I would not be bothered by the death being called Covid.

# Yep, and masks have replaced face/neck tatoos as long-range visual warnings to stay away from those people.

Indeed. THAT is something that I am totally in favor of. Let the libtards and covidians identify themselves from 50’ away. Certainly improves my day, because I know who to avoid.

It’s weird seeing the low numbers in late December.

So far the symptoms here at the MA/RI border are mild, but they’re EVERYWHERE! People who HAD BEEN ultra careful, seem to now emotionally need to return to normal. My niece is 62 and had been ultra paranoid about shots, etc. She just hosted a Christmas dinner. She has the new omicron, as does her husband and at least one of her kids. The other kids may be past it now.

I’m 77, husband 79, both with the health problems that would not play nice with the original Wuhan flu. Because we don’t know if the omicron can lead to long covid problems, we’re still being ultra cautious and seem to be one of the last couples around here who DON’T have it.

Is that area you speak of Roanoke city?

The whole idea of forcing kids to wear masks is abhorrent, not to mention ineffective. Sometimes I watch the granddaughters while my RN daughter works an on-call shift.. every time I pick up the 5-year-old in Virginia Beach, most of the kids in her classroom have their masks pulled beneath their noses…. yet none have caught COVID.

salem—what is your RN daughter’’s view of mask effectiveness for adults as well as children? There’s a left-wing oncologist, biostatistician, epidemiologist (Vinay Prasad) who summarized every study and concluded that masks are theatre for adults and harmful to children’s development.
