How did this guy survive a ‘direct lightning strike’…

The answer can be a bit complicated, but two points:
1/ Burning is very destructive... the path of the high voltage charge is pertinent
2/ If the path passes through the heart it can be deadly. OTOH, incidents of stopped hearts spontaneously restarting in a short amount of time are common
I am skeptical of the involvement of radio or cell phone. The victim's being the tallest object in a rain storm could be the most telling. It is good to remember that lightning basically starts from the ground upwards.
Another common cause of being struck is taking shelter under a tall object, such as a tree. The resultant injury is due to 'splatter'.
Predicting the effects of lightning strike (on the body) is impossible to ascertain. Also, it is only in the past two+ decades that long term effects of lightning strike have been medically documented. Prior to that the common belief was - as my doctor told me in '89 - if you survive you are OK 😒
