You can see where the aliens have been digging.
There is a long ditch across Mars.

Astronomers Detect Secret Water Reserves...

...could be harboring reserves of hidden water.

So, is it there, or is it maybe there? Detect indicates it’s been found; could be harboring means it might be there. Headline says it is, text says maybe.

They have detected hydrogen.

If it were gaseous it would have escaped eons ago.

So it is in combo with something else, hopefully oxygen, but possibly methane (CH4), which would be fortuitous as well since Methane can be an energy source.

But in order to use methane you must have oxygen to burn it with, you still need water to make oxygen or bring your own.

If it’s water under the soil, then you have oxygen, hydrogen and possibly life.....................

Looking at the digital terraine model at the top, it looks like a lot of erosion along the cliff faces, or are they from some other cause like wind? Looking at the large area surronding this gash it appears as if two thirds of that side is slightly depressed. Could this be a remnant depression from a massive hit while the mass was still semi-molten. If so could the gash be the result of a remnant weakness in the crust, and/or possibly a major hit on the opposite side of the planet (contra-coup injury?)?

A whole lot of water arrived at once, by the look of it.
