Dr. Garry Nolan is a Professor of Pathology at Stanford University. His research ranges from cancer to systems immunology. Dr. Nolan has also spent the last ten years working with a number of individual analyzing materials from alleged Unidentified Aerial Phenomenon.

Appears the writers at source are trying to compensate for the previously heavy ridicule factor re: this subject.

Exactly—does not pass the laugh test.
So to answer your question to me, the "hitchhiker effect" was never mentioned, at least not in that specific term.
I thought the series was captivating but I don't know how much of it was real or just made up even tho the participating scientists were credentialed.
The hitchhiker effect was briefly mentioned offhandedly in maybe one or two episodes I think, where they warned some people that some had seen things off the ranch they thought were related. But the mention was very quick and very oblique.
Since I assume you are curious about the series, it was not that ground breaking or shocking. There was one guy who got hit with something a year before they started filming and they showed the X-ray of his head, with the skin coming away from his skull with a hematoma swelling under it. A couple of times he started to feel ill and they hustled him out. A lot of electronic sensors buzzing and them saying the readings were weird, people feeling dizzy, a guy got little burns on his fingers, a couple of times orbs were in the sky, they saw something but didn’t get it on film, and so on. There seemed to be something weird going on, but as the other commenter said, it was reality TV, so who knows.
I think you can watch it online for free, at history channel’s website if you want. It was fun, it was like being in high school and getting to go on an adventure with a camping trip, and I am thinking there is something weird there, but it never really blew everything open. It seems like it would be a lot more fun to spend a month there with a bunch of heavily armed freepers and a bunch of steel plates to shoot at in the event nothing happened.

I did watch a couple of episodes but got the impression, as you said, that this being reality TV, the blockbuster event was always in the next episode...stay tuned.
Though I couldn't hang with the TV series, I did read an excellent book on the Ranch called Skinwalkers at the Pentagon (about the DIA involvement with and analysis of the goings-on at the Ranch).

You can see how guys get sucked into making their life’s work chasing things like that. It’s an adventure, the exhilaration of seeing something amazing, and it feels like you are right at the edge of piercing the veil on one of the most amazing truths of the world.
Kary Mullis of DNA PCR fame probably ran into this. He was at a remote cabin he owned deep in the woods, and went to use the outhouse, when he ran into what he later referred to as your “standard glowing extraterrestrial raccoon.” It was apparently human sized, standing on two feet, and leaning back against a tree when it looked at him and said, “Good evening, Dr Mullis.” He woke up a few hours later on a road up behind his cabin and stumbled home with no memory of the missing hours.
His daughter disappeared similarly for a few hours months later. They called out the Deputies, and she came stumbling home as they were searching and wouldn’t talk about it.
Asked about it all years later, all he said was something like, it was someone doing anthropology on a scale we could not imagine. Don’t know if he knew more about who it was. I’d love to know after reading this article.

“Missing 411” is another great rabbit hole to go down for late nights with nothing to do, if you ever get them any more. Lots of websites and youtube videos, with fascinating stories. Paulides is a good storyteller.
And who knows, in this weird world, it could be related to this. He seems to lean towards something like that.
