Like life in general, the entertainment industry has about a 90% failure rate. 90% of productions will lose money, 10% will pay all the bills. Because of that, anything with a little win to it will get beaten to death.
I suppose that accounts for the paucity of creativity in the industry.
So many classics they could adapt:
Agatha Christie
Oscar Wilde
Conan Doyle
Shakespeare
Even the BIBLE has some GOOD stories, just the story lines are an improvement on the horrible unwatchable shows they offer.
Any bit of History is usually a good place for stories.
