The Good Samaritan.

The Good Samaritan.

The recent impact and devastation of the tornadoes in the mid-west and south have made other Americans reach out in sympathy. We all gather around those families hit and wonder what we can do to help them. Every month we give financial support to Samaritans Purse for domestic disaster recovery, and I know they will be there helping to pick up the damage and helping people materially as well as spiritually. I am handicapped and no longer able to help in that way.

The best way I know how to help is to tell a story of comfort for the shock and the feelings of being injured. I will write based on my own injuries. I was sexually assaulted and, in an attempt, to keep me from reporting the crime, the man strangled me and interrupted the blood supply to my brain and as a result I had a stroke and part of my brain is damaged by scar tissue. I was, for a time afterwards, very afraid of men in general. My husband had his partner and friend, who stood next to him, taken away. I was in a wheelchair, and everything made me afraid. Due to the brain injury, I have a delay from what my eyes see until the time I understand what I saw. This delay makes it hard for me to communicate with people in person. My speech is somewhat slurred and hard to understand.

After the incident while we were making a pavilion in our recreation area, my husband and son cut down cedar trees from our farm for the posts. At that time, I was asking God why this man's evil was able to take so much away from me. As we skinned off the bark from the trees, we saw that there was deep purple and red color in the center of the logs. My husband told me that this was the heartwood that every tree has; it is what makes it strong and able to stand up. As we labored, we made boards to make a Christian cross from the remnants. In an effort to do my part, I tried using a power sander to smooth out the chainsaw marks and it took off! I was unable to handle the belt sander safely. My husband and son sanded the boards for me, and I saw the beauty of my men who used their knowledge of tools and carpentry to help me.

When they put the stain on, deep red hues were revealed, and the Lord spoke to me: “I created trees, I had to make a tree strong enough to hold my body nailed to it.” When Jesus had His clothes stripped from Him in humiliation, He told me that “I put myself willingly into the hands of sinful men, I can understand what a woman feels”. When Jesus put on human flesh, He did not shrug out of it, He came to the place of damage and impact, He became torn open, He had his heart broken into by a spear and said “Father, forgive them they know not what they do”. When he had paid the Righteous penalty to provide forgiveness for the sins of all of mankind and took all of the punishment from God, He said “It is finished”, it had been washed away! God the Father was no longer angry with mankind for Jesus' sake!

The Blood of Jesus fell on the ground and the earth quaked and the sun was darkened. The Roman soldiers said, “truly this was the Son of God”! Jesus had told John to take care of Mary. He knew that her heart was pierced with pain according to the Angels' prophecy when she consented to be the maid who was to bear Emmanuel, “God with us”. We are told that John took her into his own home and cared for her.

There are redwood trees that have stood as sentinels on our west coast. Their roots are deeply anchored in the American soil. Their outer bark is a barrier and as time, storms, fires and history have come and gone the heartwood stands strong. In this time our hearts are rooted deep in the soil of God's love. Throughout these last few years, we have had people trying to become winds of change to tear up America. As this year comes to a close it is a time when the heart of what makes America a united country; we will go into the new year determined to look back and see the characters who had a bad plot but who will fail. We are told to heap coals of fire on our enemy's head; this is not to form a “coal-ition” but rather in bible times they used to carry hot coals in a metal or stone container in their turbans to have a means to start someone's fire who needed it.

In this latest disaster, a small candle company was wiped out and lives were lost; let us make a new flame that burns in our hearts with compassion and a willingness to help them rebuild. Those impacted by storms and disasters must know that they are in our hearts and prayers.

During my recovery, my husband became the man that Jesus would have looked like if He were here. I became a writer and prayed my stories will bless and give hope to those hurting. God dwells in the hearts of those who accept the love of His Son, and He makes His home with us, Emmanuel! He looks down from heaven to see where in America His holy lights shine! We end the year shining our love, let us light the way for the next generation to become young saplings that can have deep roots in the Godly American story!
