I can remember my parents keeping an alarm clock by the
phone when making long distance calls so you didn’t run
over three minutes.
My father was a doctor back when patients would call their doctor directly and that doctor would make a house call if necessary. A three-minute time limit was strongly encouraged in our house even for local calls.
We use to use little egg timers... when the sand was almost to the bottom you had to end your call.
