Hard to say what the artists were actually thinking.
The symbolism can be linked to the morning star and therefor according to some to Lucifer.
It seems rather rare that artists are that obvious though. Artists seem to like to make more obscure references so as to reinforce their belief in their own intellectual superiority over those that enjoy their work. What I mean is, if the reference is to something like that then we need to follow the symbolism back to Astarte consort of Baal. Also the origin of a Night Mother type entity in some esoteric cults that was the dark opposite and consort of the entity that most of us in Christianity would think of as God the Father.
