160 mph in a 70 = 35 over?
Must be new math?

160mph on the average road is a good way a 17 year old won’t make it to 18.
To: DUMBGRUNT
They gave him a break for being extra stupid.

That's probably the maximum number described in statute. Good point though, once over 105, no reason to slow down.

I-94 in Lake County has enough traffic and bends to make it below average for this kind of stunt.

That's a special kind of stupid exclusive to XYs that they cannot teach in schools.

From
https://www.drivinglaws.org/resources/traffic-tickets/speed-violations/illinois-speeding-laws.htm The consequences of a speeding ticket depend on the circumstances. But generally, the possible penalties are:
1 to 20 miles per hour over the limit. $120 fine.
21 to 25 miles per hour over the limit. $140 fine.
26 to 34 miles per hour over the limit. Class B misdemeanor and carries up to six months in jail and a maximum $1,500 in fines.
35 miles per hour or more over the limit. Class A misdemeanor and carries up to one year in jail and a maximum $2,500 in fines.

I once got pulled over for doing 105 mph. The cop wrote me up for doing 90. He said if he wrote me up for more than 90, he’d have to take me into custody.

Sounds like they cut this kid a major break and cited him for less than they could have.
Common practice in my state....as long as your respectful to the officers and don’t act like a jackass.

That's just what the ticket was written for.
I had one for "in excess of 100" long ago in a 74 Mercury Marquis.
The most important question is WHICH MODEL AUDI???

I imagine the highest ticket they could give was for driving 35 over the limit. Meaning “at least” 35 over the limit.
To: DUMBGRUNT
Highest penalty:
35 miles per hour or more over the limit. Class A misdemeanor and carries up to one year in jail and a maximum $2,500 in fines.

Nope. They slammed him with the max.

The kid was only doing 160? Try this one out. Three minutes of great fun. Should be watched in 'full screen' mode:

In Ontario Canada if he’d been caught doing that speed the vehicle would have been confiscated.

I remember when the cop pulled me over. He said that when he finally caught up with me, that he had me clocked at about 90, but he said, I think you were going a lot faster than that. I said, yes I was. He said he was going to write me up for going 90, because if I was going faster than 25 mph over the speed limit, he’d have to arrest me. I told him thanks. I paid the ticket. It was something like $350.

Locally, Audi drivers are by far the worst @-holes on the road. It’s the car middle-agers buy when they lose their libido and need to compensate. Maybe this kid has early onset impotence.
