Many decades ago I worked in a bank. Then each teller had a “spoiled” bill drawer. Those bills went directly to the nearest Fed bank for disposal.

Yep... Absolutely. It was common when cash was still the dominant form of currency. I have had banks exchange bills that were almost completely faded white on one side or the other. As long as both of the serial numbers were visible.
