British Airways Sues Chicago Over Boeing 787 Engine Damage
Simple Flying ^ | 2 Dec 2021 | Linnea Ahlgren

Almost exactly one year ago, three British Airways Boeing 787 Dreamliners sustained engine damage from foreign object debris while at Chicago O’Hare. The airline needed to perform heavy maintenance on all six engines, resulting in unforeseen costs and canceled flights. BA has now launched a suit against the city of Chicago, requesting over $3 million in damages.

In the complaint filed with a court in Illinois, BA says that while traversing the runway, the three aircraft’s engines ingested debris that had been left behind following resurfacing and expansion work on one of ORD’s terminals.

Roger. The first thing I thought of when I read the headline was, “Do they not do FOD walks?” I wasn’t a jet mechanic, but an electronics contractor working for the Air Force and its contractors, and even I knew about the dangers of FOD to jet engines.

I worked on a project with an engineer from the Port Authority (of Allegheny County...Pittsburgh). He told me a story about the bus maintenance garage hiring a gearhead kid. His first job was to rebuild a bus engine. He did it in 3 days. The shop steward told him “you gotta understand, that’s a 2 week job!” Kid quit after 2 months.

Heh, you don't hear FOD out here in the civilian world much.

I was watching a fun video by a former F-14 pilot (Ward Carroll at Ward Carroll F-14 Tomcat Channel who has a boatload of entertaining material out there, and one of them is a grin-worthy video called 21 Cringeworthy Errors in the Movie Top Gun" and this link takes you right to the part which made me laugh about FOD...:)

If you are an inveterate aviation enthusiast like I am, it is a lot of fun to watch these videos!

“Still controlled by an ‘outfit’, just a different low talent one.”

The mafia had casinos and dance clubs.

The new ‘mafia’ has rap clubs.

Your comment about O'Hare hit a nerve because my first job out of the Marine Corps back in 1985 was at Logan Airport.

I got a job as a ramp worker that gave me night and weekend shifts so that I could go to school during the day. It was a union job (my only one). Now ramp workers are basically the guys that you see run up to the plane when it pulls into the gate. They bring the ramps to the cargo holds, handle the luggage, empty the lavatories on the planes, pump in fresh water, all that kind of stuff.

My first night on the job, I had baggage duty in which I would take the luggage off the plane and then later put the luggage on those conveyer belts that go to the passengers.

Well I was just out of the Marines and had incredible energy and stamina. I was singlehandedly slinging baggage off those carts and not even breaking a sweat while my co-workers bemusedly watched me while smoking cigarettes. Eventually one of the leads saunters up to me and whispers in my ear "Slow down...you are killing the job!"

Turns out that there was a crew of five or six people in charge of off-loading the luggage and even though I could have done it all myself, union rules stated that "x" number were required per shift. So I quickly learned that I needed to slowly put that luggage on the conveyor and take frequent breaks in between.

Everything there was "slow and easy".

I watch the ‘Spark’ tv channel on Roku connected to my tv.
Get the app for google or apple or go to Youtube.

You can watch: “Behind The Scenes Of The World’s Busiest Airport | Secret Life of Airports | Spark”

It is Atlanta, GA. They have 250 flights an hour and 2 million people travel thru a week.

104 million a year travel thru the airport....
Someone is working!
