The other day I read here on FR that about a third of the current college applicants claim American Indian ancestry to enhance their chances of being admitted. It was claimed that the colleges never check that information.

This leads me to believe that the natives must not have died of small pox as we have all been taught, but that they disappeared into the invading population.

Family history says we have Cherokee blood but I would never try to identify as Cherokee.

My Canadian wife is almost 1/4 Iroquois. Her maternal grandfather actually lived ON a reservation. But she is also half-Dutch, so she is paler than Elizabeth Warren with blonde hair and blue eyes. She has never tried to use her ancestry to get goodies.

I detest questions on forms about my race. I will not fill them out. If forced I insert, “NATIVE” as I was born here in America, “North America” since everyone wants a continent or region like European, Asian etc. and I am not Central or South American. Finally “Caucasian” When pressed I am a Native North American Caucasian Male. That gets noses out of joint. Love it.
