If Omnicron is as infectious as these early reports indicate, I doubt that it will be contained for long. Reportedly, it blows the doors off the Delta Variant for transmission, and became dominant strain in Johannesburg in record time.

I saw a report yesterday (Fri, 26 Nov) that two recent planeloads from South Africa at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam, had about 60 active COVID cases on board - likely Omnicron, but getting sequenced to find out.

It will be great news if it is significantly less deadly.

Meet the new cold, same as the old cold.

Yep, after a lot of abject failures by variants supposedly capable of challenging Delta as ‘Infectivity King’ we may finally have a worthy contender that can dethrone Delta. Delta has contributed significantly toward building our herd immunity. A less deadly Omicron variant could help put the finishing touches on the herd in a safer manner.

I guess we’ll know pretty quickly about both the infectivity and virulence of Omicron.
