In the opening scene from the past, he (Robert Red-ford, the loser of the bet) went out specifically for pepperoni pizza (looks like a quarter was up Cosmos sleeve), "shaken not stirred"* (a Martini) and his whole world changed along with Cosmo's. One taken, the other (the devious "friend" by his own hand) left.
When the facade... becomes obvious (min 1:19) a credit appears on the screen for that time:
