Assuming he is now the owner of the firearm, why suggest rejecting or destroying it?
The firearm worked as designed that night and saved his life multiple times. The weapon was not used in a crime. On the contrary, it served to prevent him being murdered.
I’m sure some collector somewhere would pay decent money for that rifle.
