Naval officers whose ships have been plagued with these "things" have concluded exactly the opposite is the case.

Last year, I watched a discussion group (couple of PhD types) over the idea of long-term and far-distance space travel. The main idea thrown out there was that you’d build some AI-robotic-like ‘things’...plan out missions of exploration, and there would be no physical beings in these vessels.
I’m prone to think these UFOs that the Navy/AF report up...are just that...AI beings with programmed orders/directions.
