Officers received a call late on Sunday night from a distressed woman who said “a possum was holding her hostage” at her home in the South Island city of Dunedin.

“When she would exit her house and attempt to reach her car, the possum would charge at her and she would flee inside,” Snr Sgt Craig Dinnissen said.

When the police arrived and approached the front door, a juvenile possum came out of the dark and climbed an officer’s leg. Dinnissen suspected it was either an escaped pet or had recently been separated from its mother.

Maurice the pet Possum in the arms of Mary Little (16) at their home in Loburn , North Canterbury, New Zealand. Maurice has been a family pet for a year and a half and was around 5 months old when he was taken in by the family. He sleeps in a lined box in the top of Little’s wardrobe in her bedroom.

After apprehending the suspect, police delivered the possum up to nearby lookout spot Signal Hill and released it into the wild “to prevent further citizen harassment”. No harm came to the possum or the officer, Dinnessen said.

There’s NO rabies in Oz and American possums virtually never get rabies.

Their body temperature is too low.

That myth comes from their hissing/foaming/drooling ‘death act” that people mistook for rabies.

Skunks are the biggest carriers of rabies. Have a few that run through my yard at night sometimes.

Good Lord when they let loose what a stench.

Raccoons are tops here, followed by skunks and cats.
Foxes used to be but cats took their spot.
Bats sometimes.

I’ve got raccoons too. Birds of every feather. Possums, rabbits, squirrels and chipmunks.

In fact that latter worked it’s way into our central ac unit this summer, bit into some wires and killed the ac. The technician said the little critter had chewed thorough some wiring and *zap*, off it went to chipmunk heaven.

I wonder if it’s name was Alvin.

Thanks so much!

Is it from the Creature of the Month Club?

It’s the gift that keeps on giving the whole year through.

January, I start the year off fine
February, you’re my little porcupine...

Good to know, I have a big one that forages in my back yard early in the morning. I’ve taken to putting old eggs from the fridge out and they’re nothing but empty shells in the morning. Guess I need to stop that, not a good behavior to encourage. He or she is a big one though that lumbers through the neighborhood in the wee hours.

Bringing them to your yard is a good idea, if you do not want ticks.

Ever since a slew of them took up residence around my house, we rarely have any ticks on the dogs, even though they’re always poking their heads into the wild plants near the fence line.
