Years ago a republican congressman helped LBJ out on some issue. LBJ told the congressman that in the next election “I’ll campaign for you or against you, whichever would help.”
Trump did what he needed to do to help. If showing up would help he would do that. If staying away would help he would do that. He signaled to his base to vote for Youngkin, and Youngkin did the rest.
The Democrats were defeated and that was the point.

LBJ was a piece of work. Not only don’t they make people like him anymore, he likely belongs in a category into which only Jackson and perhaps Lincoln might loosely fit—though perhaps there are some machine bosses out there that belong as well.
