Here's the part of Johnson's statement that fascinates me: "... but I can tell you, without an absence of clarity here, that any movie ..." Double negatives, like the passive voice, are very interesting to me. The phrase without an absence of clarity here means, I think, "with clarity." And that prepositional phrase, in itself, is totally superfluous. Would we think that if he had not included that phrase, that we would think that his words had no clarity? Johnson takes what should be a straightforward, common-sense declaration, and gussies it up beyond almost all recognition.
