The context was the U.S. celebration of Thanksgiving, and most people in the U.S. do tie in their celebration with the one in New England with Indians and Pilgrims eating together, having come after a particularly difficult situation. Part of the evidence of this is the fact that turkey and cranberries ARE the common side dishes.

Recognizing that aspect of U.S. history one day a year is NOT stating that "the story of the US is all wrapped up in New England".
