Correlation doesn't prove causation. And even if there was causation it might not be sinister. For example, it could be that one manufacturing operation made bad batches and the distribution of their product was done differently than others.

I'm not defending these people, just pointing out the nature of statistics vs reality.

Seems interesting - why would some lots go to specific geographic areas while others were distributed widely?

I suppose you could justify it based on population density. If you've got a million doses in a lot, you could send them all to New York, or LA, or Chicago, or Houston... Or you could send those million does in a lot to the entire states of Wyoming, North & South Dakota, etc. ;-)

But the variation in adverse effects across lots highlights one of my concerns I voiced early on. Just when they were authorizing full-rate production and giving emergency use authorization. I asked if there was a chance that manufacturing errors or variability would impact the mRNA based shots - make them in-effective, over-effective, or programmed to do the wrong thing. The initial doses used in the first and second phases of the trial were no-doubt "hand made" in the lab by dedicated technicians. The industrial scale quantities - doses by the millions - are not produced under the same quality controls, nor packaged/shipped/handled with the same care. Not a rip on the companies, that's just not possible. You just don't make and deliver your 5 millionth dose with the same care you do the first 100 that were made across the hall and hand carried over here to the test subjects... (or something like that)

So it is unsurprising, expected and predictable even, that there will be relatively good and bad lots. How "bad" is bad? Well gee, that's the kind of thing you find out in the later phases of drug trials. You know, the phase 3 and phase 4 stuff...that we are learning now. That we are learning with a pool of tens of millions of people in the phase 3 trials rather than a few hundred or a couple of thousand. I just hope the "bad" isn't too bad. But it appears that for some percentage the "bad" is as bad as it gets - it is fatal within hours or days.
