I don’t usually quote wiki, but this seems like a good definition for troll.
“In internet slang, a troll is a person who posts inflammatory, insincere, digressive, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, with the intent of provoking readers into displaying emotional responses, or manipulating others’ perception.”
Its been my experience that the end game can vary from shutting down discussion to getting people to lose their tempers and violate community guidelines so that the troll can tattle and get them banned.
