The Japan Meteorological Agency raised the warning level for Mount Aso to three on a scale of five, warning hikers and residents to avoid the mountain.
The smoke rose as high as 3.5 kilometers (11,480 feet) above the crater, with pyroclastic flow pouring out 1.3 kilometers (0.8 mile) down the western slope of the mountain, the agency said.
The explosion blew off volcanic rocks as far as 900 meters (2,950 feet) from the crater and ashfalls were detected in several towns in the Kumamoto and neighboring Miyazaki prefectures.

Somebody needs to put a cork in that thing, don’t they know about global warming?
Massive column of smoke? How could they tell? (With all the smoke pouring over Japan from the PRC)

Volcano Mount Aso erupts in Kyushu, Japan 10-20-2021

Did you see the ant-like crowds of people scurrying to their cars and speeding off?
I sure as hell would have been one of them.
I just had a dream a couple of nights back where I came out of a tunnel under a big city (it was a dream, so I have no idea what city) only to see a massive conical volcano probably ten miles away in the throes of a violent eruption, and it was damned vivid. (for some reason, I had the impression it was Mount Hood)
I stopped in the middle of the highway gawking, and saw others get out of their cars and begin videoing the unbelievable event.
For a split second, I wanted to take a video too because it was so vivid, the dark wall of white, gray, and black smoke with lightning and bright red and orange mixed in, and at the bottom, it appeared the volcano was coming apart right then and there. My immediate thought was “What the Hell am I thinking?”
Then, I saw a giant lahar sweeping my way across the short plain and up the miles long hill that ran straight towards the volcano...shouting “S**t! S**t! S**t!) I did a U-turn and floored it, squealing the tires, my eyes glued on my rear-view mirror.
I saw it sweeping up the hill in my wake, engulfing the stopped cars whose drivers had been videoing the event, and I woke up.
It was very vivid, and I lay there for a few moments thinking of it, and thought “I will never be in that position of videoing something that is going to kill me...”
Nightmarish.
I used to sail past Stromoli in south Italy at night. Beautiful. But they should be illegal.
Stromboli.
Activity at Stromboli has been recorded by historians for more than 1,000 years, and varies from mild degassing to lava flows to violent explosive eruptions. Records from 1907 indicate that one explosion was strong enough to shatter windows in the island’s villages, and strong explosions in 1930 were associated with an earthquake that also created a small tsunami. The most recent eruption began in 1932, and has continued essentially uninterrupted since then.
Glad I don’t live there anymore
Mount Hood has had some minor rumblings last couple of days.
The city would have been Portland. Stay out of Portland.
Maybe we can sacrifice Greta to the Volcano.
MT Hood had 11 swarms of earthquakes on Oct. 18th-19th...I live @40 miles from it.
Don’t like your dream.
Well if ever a post made me wonder if someone had lived before and died in a volcanic eruption that was it.
I’m always reading about Vesuvius, thinking how just horrible that was, and those people had no clue. Had time to get out but no knowledge of what was going to happen.
I always feel bad for the poor animals.
Look at the bright side, 40 miles is in the safe zone (except for ash) and you will be cut off from Portland
As if you needed the excuse of volcanic eruption to stay out of Portland. Ha ha.
NOW that would be a good thing “cutoff from Portland “
Nah...we’d have Portland cut off from US!
“sacrifice Greta”
We can be pretty sure she is a virgin. That sour face. Yikes!
