There’s been evidence of polar orientation shifts for a long time. We’re able to pinpoint time frames much better with modern science, but the historical record is full of instances where aurorae were seen much closer to the equator than is common.
It’s understood that any sort of shift like that today would likely be damaging to modern communications.
